What Is Affiliate Marketing And Does It Work – Monetize Your Online Business

OK My Boss Ladies, here goes the nitty gritty…

Before I knew anything about blogging, I was ignorant to affiliate marketing and how I could make money as a blogger. I knew that there were people who did this, I just didn’t know how and I had no clue there was training that I could turn to for learning. I want to eliminate that doubt for you, so here is my advice.

What is affiliate marketing and does it work?

Yes, and No. I will share what I’ve learned in these past few months and perchance you can use these techniques and monetize your online business.

What is affiliate marketing? I layman’s terms, it is a marketing agreement by which an online retailer pays commission to an external website for traffic or sales made from its referrals.

Explanation: If you promote a business of service of some sort on your blog or online business and you have a contract with said business or service, you will gain a commission if people either click on your provided link, or buy something from the seller using a link you provide within your text.

Seems easy enough, right?

It can be, but first you need to make sure you are getting the needed traffic to your website in order to drive sales. People are not going to visit your site once and buy something from you if they don’t believe what you are selling them. This is where your content comes into play.

You want to convince people through your own experience and know how that they need the product you are promoting or reviewing even if they don’t. That is how you are going to make money.

This is why when starting an online business, it’s easier to focus on one area and one audience. If you are promoting various things or working in ten different niches your audience is too broad and it will be harder for you to hone in and get the sales you need.

Focusing on one area and creating content based on that one area will show that you are an authority in it and people are more likely to trust you, your website, and the products you are recommending.

Does affiliate marketing work?

Of course, it does. But, let’s back track a bit. There are plenty of affiliate programs that you can become a part of. A lot of them will ask for your web address and check if you are a good fit for promoting their products. Some may decline your request and some may accept, but you need to put in a bit of work first.

Before jumping into affiliate marketing, I recommend getting your website a solid foundation first. For me, this was the following pages:

  • About Me
  • Privacy Policy
  • Affiliate Disclosure
  • 12 Relevant Posts To Your Niche (using relevant low competition keywords)
  • And At Least 5 Comments On Each Post

This foundation equals about a month’s worth of work. I know it seems like a lot, but it’s really not and you will be starting on a great foot with this. Typically, after about a month, you should get indexed by Google or other search engines and although you may not see your website on the first page, it’s there, and chances are, someone may see it.

Once you have this solid foundation, this will be a good time to start applying for affiliate programs that are relevant to your business.

As I was saying before, of course it does. It just takes time, practice, and building great content. Don’t believe the hype of making 5k your first week, it doesn’t work that way.

Instead, give yourself ample time to generate traffic to your site, build your content, incorporate your affiliate links and grow your business. This could be anywhere from 6 months to a year.

I know, I know, you thought you was going to quit your job Monday morning, right? Wrong. One advice I have for you, if nothing else sticks is don’t quit your job until you starting making money from your business.

Like any business, it takes time and dedication and you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. Continue your traditional job and build your business in whatever spare time you have. And this is doable. I’ve done it, a lot of people have done it. And in the end, you will be happy that you were smart about your decision.

The just in case…

what-is-affiliate-marketing-girl-boss-5Let’s say for arguments sake that your online business doesn’t work. What will you do if you’ve already quit your job and invested all of your time into it? You will be furious, mad, angry, and will probably write off blogging and affiliate marketing forever.

But, if it doesn’t work, and you still have your job, this gives you the chance to start again in a different area of expertise. This is not unheard-of. Not every niche will make money and you have to find which one works for you and one that you can build a brand out of.

This is why I recommend this online community to anyone who wants to get started in the business whether you have experience or not. There is so much you can learn from this community and so much support and encouragement even when you are flat on your face.

Most business that get started will fail in the first year, but that’s still progress. From failure, we learn what we did wrong and what we can change for the future business. It’s all a process.

My advice to you

what-is-affiliate-marketing-girl-boss-6Incorporating affiliate links into your content doesn’t instantly equal success. It’s a way to grow and make money, yes, but it still requires hard work and dedication. The links will not make you money just by being there, you will need to promote, use marketing tools, such as social media, word of mouth, and any other means of promoting your business and with this hard work will come success.

You can monetize your online business with affiliate marketing, make a great commission that will become your income, and continue to grow your brand, but take my advice here. Give yourself time, build your foundation, promote your business, build your brand, and succeed. And if you don’t succeed the first time, try again.

I feel that blogging is a great way to make money and I feel that it’s the perfect opportunity to do while you have another job. It isn’t as time-consuming as a physical job, and it’s something you can do while your kids and family are sleeping. It’s an opportunity that I feel is missed by so many people.
